Warwick Economic Brief - March 2008

Warwick Shire, in the heart of Queensland’s rich Darling Downs, not only generates some of Australia’s best agricultural produce but also offers an ideal environment for business and industry growth.

If you are looking to relocate your operations, or establish a new business, we invite you to consider the Warwick Shire advantages.

You’ll be in good company

Warwick Shire’s strategic location, stable workforce and quality community facilities have attracted a wide range of industry.

  • Woolworths’ Big W Distribution Centre – the largest distribution warehouse in the Southern Hemisphere, servicing stores from Canberra to Darwin.
  • John Dee Warwick – an export beef abattoir employing about 500 people.
  • MediHerb – a manufacturer of natural medicines which recently invested $1.5 million to triple production.

Position, position, position

Warwick is strategically located at the junction of the New England and Cunningham Highways – two of the most important interstate road routes in Australia. The New England Highway is the major inland route from Brisbane to Sydney and the Cunningham Highway (Brisbane to Goondiwindi) links with the Newell Highway, the major route from Brisbane to Melbourne.

Travelling along the high grade Cunningham Highway, Warwick is just two hours by road from the Port of Brisbane and Brisbane International Airport.Rail connections also link Warwick to major population and distribution centres in Queensland and interstate.

Stable Workforce

Warwick Shire has a total population of approximately 21,000 with approximately 12,000 people living in the city of Warwick (2001 Census of Population and Housing, Australian Bureau of Statistics). Therefore, labour is plentiful and stable and is backed up by a rural community work ethic. Employment training schemes are readily available through the Warwick campus of the South Queensland Institute of TAFE and a regional group training program for apprentices and trainees.

Low Prices

Warwick Shire has repeatedly recorded the lowest cost of living in Queensland. Coupled with reasonable land prices and economic building costs, it all adds up to a winning edge to help your business get started.

Quality Services

Land at the 71 hectare Warwick Industrial Estate is fully serviced with water, sewerage, sealed roads and electricity. The Estate, which has attracted many new industries in recent years, is located beside the railway line – just a five minute drive from the centre of Warwick city.
